Living History at the Pioneer Home

Officers Study Science Behind Deadly Force

Law enforcement officers from across the state have spent the past two days in a training on the use of deadly force. The workshop comes after two deadly, high-profile suspect shootings by Anchorage Police officers in 2012. As KSKA's Daysha Eaton reports, the training is focused on science.

Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins appears to have won a seat in the Alaska House of Representatives. The 23-year-old Sitka Democrat remained ahead of Haines Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Thomas after the final absentee ballots were counted today.

From Barrow To The Big Cities: The Story Behind Two Orphan Walruses

You may recall stories recently about two Alaska walrus pups going to new homes in big city zoos. The pudgy cute faces of Patak and Mitik were seen nationwide as the youngsters made their way to Indianapolis and New York City zoos. National reports indicated they were rescued from the ocean off Alaska. But that’s a pretty big place. KTOO’s Rosemarie Alexander narrowed it down with the help of a former Juneau resident who lives in Barrow and visited with one of the walrus pups.

Royal Dutch Shell’s Role in Alaska Oil and Gas

On September 10th, after a six-year effort, wrought with permitting challenges and legal battles, and recent delays with renovation of its oil spill-containment barge, Shell Alaska finally began preparatory drilling for offshore oil in the Chukchi Sea. A week later, the company announced that it would abandon plans after an accident damaged its oil spill containment dome. On September 20th, the company received the go ahead from federal officials to move forward with initial drilling activities in the Beaufort Sea.
