The after school youth-outreach program has been holding FORK Club Cooking Classes for the last few months providing kids tips on using healthy, local ingredients.

Project Aims to Turn Homer Into Tidal Energy Testing Site
Work is continuing on Homer’s Tidal Energy Incubator Project. Those involved, which includes scientists from around the state and University of Alaska engineering students, are trying to find out if they can turn tides into electricity sold on the market. They’ve been studying the tides near Homer’s Deep Water Dock.
Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Updates Concussion Policy
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District school board is fine-tuning the concussion policy for all student athletes. Members have been discussing the slight changes since August and action from the board is expected next month.

Kenai Peninsula Students Learn About Salmon Life Cycle
Students from central and southern Kenai Peninsula schools gathered at the Anchor River Friday to learn about the salmon life cycle. This was the kick-off to the Salmon in the Classroom program. The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District partners with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to teach kids about one of the state’s most valuable resources.

FEMA Takes Closer Look at Homer Flood Maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, is in the process of creating more specific flood zone maps for populated areas around coastal Alaska. Contractors have been working on maps for the Kenai Peninsula since 2011.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Rediske Air hangar in Nikiski on Saturday afternoon to remember and celebrate the life of Walter Rediske. He was killed in the July 7th plane crash at the Soldotna Airport. He was 42-years-old.

Stalled Engine May Have Caused Soldotna Crash
Federal investigators are saying the plane crash in Soldotna could have been caused by a stalled engine. Agents with the National Transportation Safety Board have been on the Kenai Peninsula since Monday examining the wreckage. Ten people, including one local pilot and two families visiting from Greenville, South Carolina were on board when it crashed late Sunday morning.

Air Taxi Crashes At Soldotna Airport, 10 Killed
An air taxi has crashed at the Soldotna Airport killing all 10 people on board. Alaska State Troopers Spokesperson Megan Peters says Soldotna Police, Central Emergency Services and troopers responded to a call just after 11 a.m. on Sunday and found the fixed-wing aircraft fully engulfed in flames.

House District 33: Wilson Wins Handily
Incumbent Peggy Wilson will represent the newly-created House District 33. The new district includes Wilson’s hometown, Wrangell, Ketchikan and northern parts of Prince of Wales Island. The Republican captured 58 percent of the vote on Election Day. Initial numbers out of Wrangell put her ahead with 642 votes to Olsen’s 90 and Johansen’s 56.
Wrangell’s Garnet Grit Betties Are Recruiting
Women in Wrangell are strapping on roller skates and heading to the rink. Wrangell’s Garnet Grit Betties meet Wednesday and Sunday evenings at the skating rink inside Hope Community Church. Ten women showed up during a recent practice. They took a few spins around the track, practiced skating fundamentals and learned some derby techniques.
