2016 Iditarod’s top-5 finishers check into Nome
The Iditarod's top-5 finishers are rounded out, and more are on their way to Nome today. Dallas Seavey won his third-straight Iditarod, checking into Nome at 2:20 this morning [Tuesday], followed about 45 minutes later by his father, Mitch Seavey.

Dallas Seavey first into White Mountain
Reigning Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey is the first musher into White Mountain. He checked in at 9.48 a.m. Monday for the mandatory 8-hour layover at the checkpoint before continuing on the final 77 miles to Nome by way of Safety.
Iditarod leaders close to White Mountain
Dallas Seavey and Mitch Seavey are within 30 miles of White Mountain, with Brent Sass trailing just a couple miles behind. The trio pulled out of Elim within half an hour of each other - Dallas at 4:11 a.m., Brent at 4:37 a.m., and Mitch at 4:40 a.m.

Iditarod veteran Mitch Seavey was the first musher into Kaltag on Saturday morning, checking in at 7:41 a.m. But, as has been the case in the dash down the Yukon River, Brent Sass was the first one out.
Sled dog dead after snowmachiner attacks Iditarod teams
In Saturday's early morning hours, a snowmachiner repeatedly tried to harm Iditarod veterans Aliy Zirkle, Jeff King and their teams outside of Nulato, according to an Iditarod press release, killing one dog and injuring several others.
Zirkle first musher into Galena, Sass first to leave
Iditarod veteran Aliy Zirkle was the second musher out of Ruby early this [Friday] morning, but was the first to reach Galena, checking in at 10:46 a.m.

Iditarod veteran Aliy Zirkle was the second musher out of Ruby early this morning, but she overtook Brent Sass a short ways down the trail. Both are on the move toward Galena - a 50-mile run down the Yukon River - with 15 dogs in harness.
Jeff King takes Iditarod lead mushing toward Ruby
Denali musher Jeff King, so far, is the lone musher to push through Cripple toward the Ruby. The 4-time Iditarod champion spent four hours in the Cripple checkpoint, before heading down the trail at 3:05 a.m. today.
DeNure scratches in Rainy Pass
Delta Junction's Zoya Denure scratched in Rainy Pass this morning at 9:50 a.m. According to an Iditarod press release, Denure made the decision due to concerns for her team.

Girdwood musher Nicolas Petit is the first competitor into the Nikolai checkpoint. Dallas and Mitch Seavey are running in second and third place, respectively, with Wade Marrs trailing in fourth.

After briefly relinquishing the lead Monday, Nicolas Petit is back in front on the way to Nikolai. But, the pack isn't far behind. Dallas Seavey, Wade Marrs, Mitch Seavey and Hugh Neff are within 10 miles of Petit.

Progress Continues on Containment of Sockeye Fire

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are aiding efforts to contain the Sockeye fire near Willow. The fire is now considered fifteen percent contained. All evacuation orders have been lifted. Only residents will be allowed into these areas.
Sockeye Evacuees Get Chance to Return to Their Homes Friday
Update: Friday, June 19. 7:00 am.
Managers of the Sockeye Fire near Willow plan to begin letting residents back into the evacuation area Friday. At 10 this morning, the evacuation zone will be reduced to the fire perimeter line, controlled by nine security checkpoints. Homeowners who have lost homes will be let into the fire zone, starting at 11. The evacuation is set to end entirely on Saturday but security checkpoints will remain in place through the weekend. On the Parks Highway, traffic will be controlled between mileposts 71 and 78 until Monday.
Pilot Cars Assist Traffic on Parks Highway
Update: 11:25 p.m. Monday, June 15th.
Pilot cars are assisting traffic on the Parks Highway. Incident Management team information officer Sarah Saarloos says as long as the fire is moderate through the night, traffic will be allowed through.
Mat Su information officer Vickie Lee Fenster says officials recommend that residents who live between miles 63 and 78 should evacuate.
