Sullivan Digs in to Battle with Unions, Assembly Questions Plan

Anchorage Assembly members met with Mayor Dan Sullivan and Municipal attorneys Friday (2/15) for a work session on the Mayor's proposal to limit unions. Ordinance number 37 is aimed at cutting costs and limiting the union power of municipal workers. It was introduced at the Anchorage Assembly last week, where and estimated more than 1-thousand people showed up to rally against it. KSKA's Daysha Eaton has the story.

Mayor Dan Sullivan unveils a surprise labor-law bill that will diminish the power of unions. The cruise ship wastewater bill is moving rapidly - if not smoothly - in the Senate. Shell is sending the damaged drill rig Kulluk to Asia. The filing deadline for the Assembly and the School Board has come and gone. Conservatives' efforts to move legislation that would expand school choice - through Charter schools and aid to parochial schools - is getting a lot of legislative attention as is vouchers. It appears that Congress and the president will not avoid the sequester - major and sudden reductions in federal funding. The Republican Party's battle over the chairmanship of the party is still making waves in the capital. A Spenard Bar Owner Climbs Denali

Mountain Mike. The most exciting thing I ever did was mountain climbing. A forty-six year old Spenard bar owner that had smoked for fifteen years and never climbed anything but a bar stool was not exactly a prime candidate for challenging some of the world’s most famous peaks. Assembly Allows Union Proposal to Move Ahead, Huge Turnout

Hundreds of people rallied at the Anchorage Assembly chambers Tuesday night to protest a proposal by Mayor Dan Sullivan, aimed at limiting unions. Despite the huge turnout to protest the proposal, Assembly members voted to allow it to move ahead to public hearings. KSKA's Daysha Eaton has the story.
