AK: A Remote Cruise
It’s not often that cruise ships call in the far western Aleutian port of Adak, but earlier this month, one did just that. The 295-foot Caledonian Sky wound up in Adak after bad weather forced it to bypass its original destination.

This July look forward to listening to some new shows on KSKA! When Talk of the Nation ends production, Here and Now will expand to two hours (except Tuesdays). Midsummer Celebrations in Alaska
The peak of summer is a time of celebration in Alaska. In Fairbanks, baseball is played under the midnight sun; in Seward, Mount Marathon awaits; in Barrow it will be Eskimo Games; and there are Independence Day parades all over the state. Announcing the Great Alaskan Short Film Contest
The Anchorage International Film Festival announces the Great Alaskan Short Film Contest. This is a new contest meant to encourage filmmaking in Alaska by Alaskans.
Films must be between 15 and 25 minutes in length and not have screened anywhere previously. Winners will be awarded cash prizes.

Pribilof Islands Middle Schoolers Make a Documentary about Seabirds
A group of St. Paul Island 6th and 7th grade students have been studying the seabirds native to their island. For their final project for the Seabird Youth Network, the young students teamed up with Alaska Teen Media Institute to make a video documentary.

Mount Marathon
During the 2012 Mount Marathon race, two runners were terribly injured and one disappeared, never to be found. Organizers hope this year’s race is safer, without losing its adventurous edge. On the next Outdoor Explorer, we’ll talk about the new rules, and about the joy of mountain running and competition with two of the best in Alaska, plus a race organizer.
