Nearly one month after the federal government launched its new online health insurance marketplace, few Alaskans have been able to sign up. We'll discuss the frustrations and the successes with the marketplace and look ahead at how the Affordable Care Act will roll out in 2014.

Health Care Coordination
We in the U.S. spend more on health care than any other developed country and by many measures have less quality care. In addition many Americans have no health care coverage. The Affordable Care Act attempts to provide access to health care to more Americans but does little to address costs and quality. In this program we discuss efforts to address the two other problems with our health care system - cost and quality with Dr. Richard Antonelli of Children’s Hospital, Boston and Harvard Medical School.

Battle Continues Over Anchorage Labor Ordinance; And Tensions Rise Between Wal-Mart, Fishermen
Mayor Dan Sullivan and the Anchorage Assembly battle over the controversial labor ordinance. The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce comes out in favor of Medicaid expansion. A special shelter for the mentally ill is in the works in Anchorage.

Alaska – The Nutrient Cycle: A Visual Story
Once they enter fresh water chum salmon stop feeding and morph into an aggressive creature intent only on mating.
After spawning, they die and their bodies become a source of nutrients for everything in the forest and sea.

New Library Space for the Very Young
The idea of libraries serving youth is a relatively recent concept, especially given that the libraries have been around for nearly 4,000 years ago.
Although some public libraries had children’s books in their collections in the 1800s, most of them didn’t allow youth in the reading rooms.

Canoeing 5,000 Miles in 5 Months
Starting in Washington, going over the Chilkoot Pass, down the Yukon, through the Bering Sea, up river to Lake Iliamna, finally ending up in Anchorage's Westchester Lagoon, Bob Vollhaber paddled a canoe five thousand miles in five months. He’d never done anything like the before. On the next Outdoor Explorer, listen to an interview with Bob recorded on September 17th, just days after he completed the extraordinary journey.

AK: Spear Fishing
For one month each fall, Interior residents wade into the crystal clear waters of the Chatanika River to catch whitefish. They spawn in the fall, unlike other fish in Alaska. The state limits both the number of permits and the harvest. This isn’t your typical fishery. Instead of rods and reels, or nets, fishermen use spears.
