KSKA: Thursday, September 28, at 2:00p.m. On the next Outdoor Explorer, some real explorers. Bjorn Olsen and Kim McNett explored much of Alaska’s Arctic Ocean coast by fat bike and pack raft, and they brought back some great stories and insights. We’ll also talk about their trips on the Kenai Peninsula and how you can try out this fast and remarkably practical way of covering the backcountry by pedaling and paddling, and go to new, exciting places. Alaska’s high school sports teams spend a lot of time and money on travel. But $15,000 and 2,000 miles for a single trip? That’s unusual. Earlier this month the Kotzebue Girls Volleyball team travelled to Sitka to play Mount Edgecumbe and Sitka High School. Listen now

On the next Hometown Alaska, we'll talk about welcoming newcomers of all kinds to our city. Our guest will be Anchorage First Lady Mara Kimmel, who has led the Welcoming Anchorage initiative. Monday, September 25, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m. Prenatal exposure to alcohol is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. These problems are often lifelong and have high costs for society. Line One will focus on the diagnosis and interventions on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder during this program. LISTEN HERE

KSKA: Friday, September 22 at 2:45pm. Cyrano's Theatre Company recently moved from their downtown location at 4th and D to 3800 Debarr Rd (site of the former Out North Contemporary Art House) and they are opening their new space with Qui Nguyen's She Kills Monsters, a story of a young woman ("Agnes", played by Taylor Campbell) who enters the world of Dungeons & Dragons to try to understand her deceased sister ("Tilly", played by Jessica Faust) and learns a lot about herself along the way. She Kills Monsters promises much in the way of role-playing, sword fighting and adventure. This dark comedy runs September 22 through October 15. LISTEN HERE

NPS has recorded only three bear-related incidents dating to 1950 at its most famous viewing spot. Park rangers attribute that to good orientation, supervision, accountability of food and gear, and abundant supply of Bristol Bay sockeye. Listen now

KSKA: Thursday, September 21, at 2:00p.m. For the next Outdoor Explorer, Charles joined the beluga count, when more than 12-hundred people gathered at viewing sites around Cook Inlet and made 260 sightings of whales. Citizen scientists recorded the location of pods, their movements, and even the identity of individual whales. The main thing about the day was being outdoors in the sun with a lot of other people who love this place and were eager to learn more about these magnificent animals. LISTEN HERE
