Being of Iraqi origin, Farah Killidar has significant personal and professional interest in Iraq’s legal and political development. She has made presentations in the Middle East, the U.K. and the U.S. on Iraq’s legal system and the foreign investment climate; published articles on the subject; was invited as guest-lecturer at educational institutes; advised corporate and government clients on foreign investment in Iraq and ongoing changes to the legal and political system. When residing in Alaska, Farah acted as the executive director of the Alaska World Affairs Council and, more recently, as an independent legal consultant advising the U.S. Department of Commerce on Iraq’s commercial law development. Bill Hess is a photographer who has immersed himself in the Native cultures of the Arctic for decades, and came back with extraordinary images and stories. His book “The Gift of the Whale” is a classic on the subject of Inupiaq hunting. And he’s also a humble and funny person to talk with. The idea of libraries serving youth is a relatively recent concept, especially given that the libraries have been around for nearly 4,000 years ago. Although some public libraries had children’s books in their collections in the 1800s, most of them didn’t allow youth in the reading rooms. Read more.

Opening the 10-02 area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or ANWR has been a dream of Alaska’s congressional delegation and the oil industry for decades, but for Gwitch’in people and environmentalists, the idea is a nightmare. The Bureau of Land Management plans a lease sale there this year.
