Earlier this year it was announced that National Women’s Hockey League would begin its first season this fall. The move is huge for women hockey players, who until now had little to no options to pursue their careers past the college level. Alaska scientists brief the White House science advisor

Last week the president visited Alaska, and so did the White House science advisor, Dr. John Holdren. Holdren painted a sobering picture of climate change in the north during his speech at the State Department’s GLACIER conference in Anchorage. But before GLACIER got underway, Holdren had a briefing with a handful of Alaska scientists. Two of them join us on Alaska Edition this week. Global interest in the Arctic

In assuming chairmanship of the Arctic Council once again, the United States has upped its attention to Arctic issues. On the heels of the Department of State’s GLACIER conference in Anchorage, the Alaska World Affairs Council invited representatives from nations one wouldn’t necessarily assume would have an interest in the Arctic. Their discussion with U.S. Arctic Research Commission Chair Fran Ulmer helps to show how this global interest is taking shape. Listen Now:

AK: Running the Klondike Relay from Skagway to Whitehorse

Last weekend, nearly 1,600 people ran a 10-part race from Skagway over the Coast Mountains and into Whitehorse, Yukon. It’s part endurance trial, part road trip and part party. For many on both sides of the border, running the 110-mile Klondike Road Relay is an annual tradition. Download Audio:

Faith and its role in public policy development

Today we’re talking about faith and public policy. The intersection of the two has been highlighted this week by Pope Francis’ visit to Washington, D.C., and his pointed comments on climate change, immigration, and homelessness. Similar conversations are also happening here in Alaska where interfaith religious groups have lead campaigns to expand Medicaid and increase environmental protections. Today we’ll talk about the role faith plays in developing public policy in Alaska. AK: High school students enter the world of nano-agriculture

High school students in Kodiak are doing college-level science. Maybe even Ph.D.-level science. World Bridge is a NASA-sponsored group that assigns Alaskan students to scientific research projects. At a recent competition in Italy, the group showed that their earthquake research could have a global impact, but that’s only one project they’re working on. They’ve also entered the world of nano-agriculture. Download Audio
