Western Alaska Braces for Big Storm

They're preparing for a big storm in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. The National Weather Service says it will likely hit this evening and hit hard. Forecasters say near-hurricane force winds will generate 20-foot seas over the Chukchi Sea and 15-to-25-feet seas over the northern Bering Sea.

Goose Creek Prison Will Open in Spring

The newest addition to the state’s prison system, Goose Creek Correctional Center, will receive inmates next spring. The facility, located about nine miles from Port MacKenzie in the Matanuska Susitna Borough, relies less on innovation than on the tried and true, according to Alaska Corrections Commissioner Joe Schmidt.

Pollock B Season Wraps Up, But Some Fish Still Left on Table

The pollock B season closed last Tuesday, and now the final harvest numbers are out. Over 1.16 million metric tons of pollock were caught in the Bering Sea this year. That’s enough to make more than 3 billion boxes of fish sticks.

‘Supreme Court Live’ to be Held at Lathrop High School

Anchorage Receives Over 10 Inches of Snow Since Saturday

Anchorage has recorded more than 10 inches of snow since Saturday in a series of short but intense storms. Plows around the city are working hard to keep the roads clear. And cross country skiers are excited to have such good coverage early in the season.

Sitka Hit by Small Quake

Sitka had an earthquake Saturday. Measured at Magnitude 4-point-34, it was centered southwest of the city offshore.

Two Go Over Cliff on Douglas Island

No names are yet released from an incident in which two people apparently went off a cliff on Douglas Island on Sunday. A woman was heard calling for help at Kowee Creek below the cliff and Fire and Rescue workers found a 22 year old man nearby dead.

The Arctic

The sea ice continues to melt away more each summer and the U.S. Senate remains stalled on ratifying the Law of the Sea Treaty. But the Coast Guard is beefing up its arctic presence, research vessels are surveying the sea floor, and other nations are beginning to send cargo through Arctic routes.
