Crabbers Eye Advancing Ice

So far this year most parts of the Arctic have seen less sea ice than normal, but not in the Bering Sea. Persistent cold weather has brought the ice edge to within 40 miles of the Pribilof Islands. That’s a concern for fishermen heading north for the snow crab season.

Taylor Brelsford Talks About Haiti Earthquake Aftermath

Two years ago today, an earthquake devastated the country of Haiti and had ripple effects around the world. One of those ripples made it to Alaska, where a family nearly lost their daughter in the disaster. Krista Brelsford was trapped in the rubble and ended up losing her leg. A year ago, her father Taylor, brought the man who helped save Krista’s life to Alaska, hoping that he could get a high school diploma and maybe even continue on to college.

Coldest Villages Paying Highest Prices For Fuel

And while the price of fuel will most likely not reach $9 dollars a gallon in Nome this winter, some residents in the coldest parts of the state pay the highest prices.

Up To 16 Inches Of Snow Expected In Anchorage

It may be hard for residents of Southcentral Alaska to believe, but there is more snow in the forecast. A lot more snow. The National Weather Service expects the storm to start around 9pm in the Anchorage area tonight. By the time it’s all over 24 hours later, 8 to 16 inches of new snow could be on the ground. For the Mat-Su Valley, the predicted snow totals are a bit tamer- only 5-11 inches.

Plows Brace For Another Big Snowstorm

Anchorage is on pace to break the city’s snowfall record this winter. The 80 or so inches that has fallen so far is about double the average. And the city is now bracing for another gigantic wallop of the white stuff.

Nome Fuel Delivery Costly For Government Agencies

The price of the fuel to customers in Nome after the upcoming fuel delivery is still to be determined. Nomeites may be spared the cost of gas at $9 a gallon, but the operation to deliver fuel with icebreaker support is not cheap for the government agencies involved.
