Wednesday, a jury convicted an Anchorage man of first degree murder for killing his girlfriend by shooting her in the eye last year. The defense for James Marquez, 36, argued for manslaughter, saying Marquez committed the act in a fit of rage. But the prosecution argued the act was done deliberately.
Man Who Crashed JBER Gate Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison
A five year prison term and more than $78,000 restitution is the sentence for the man who crashed a pickup through Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson last January. Kyle Hansen, 26, of Wasilla, was convicted of assaulting a federal officer who was knocked down at a roadblock at the base's gate as Hansen drove out. Hansen had a long chain of DUI convictions behind him.

FEMA Admin Keeping Close Eye On Yukon River Disaster Response
FEMA Region 10 Administrator Ken Murphy is in Alaska this week to keep an eye on disaster response for Yukon River flood victims. Murphy spoke with APRN on Wednesday on the agency’s ultimate goal of providing services to disaster survivors to get them back on their feet as soon as possible. As of July 21, FEMA has paid out over $1 million in awards to individuals and households in the damaged areas.

Day of Swimming Ends Tragically in Death of 14-Year-Old Boy
A 14-year-old Kodiak boy drowned in Lake Gertrude at Fort Abercrombie on Tuesday night. The Alaska State Troopers report Rex Matautia was swimming with friends around 8 p.m. when he began struggling and slipping underwater. The other boys attempted to save him, but couldn’t hang on.

Bethel Gas Fire Injures Three
A fire injured three people in Bethel Sunday afternoon when the gas tank they were filling in their boat exploded. The boat was on a trailer at the North Star Gas station near Brown Slough Bridge. Bethel police, fire fighters, and medics responded to the emergency call which came in around 3 p.m.

Court Upholds Western Aleutian Fishing Restrictions
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld restrictions on fishing in the western Aleutians to protect an endangered stock of Steller Sea lions. The basic question the court addressed in their opinion was whether the National Marine Fisheries Service violated any statutes when it restricted fishing in the western Aleutians in 2011.

Mat-Su Assembly Approves Money For M/V Susitna Upkeep
The Mat-Su Borough Assembly has voted to approve more than $65,000 for the upkeep costs of the M/V Susitna. The prototype ferry was constructed by the U.S. Navy, and was acquired by the Borough in order to provide a means of crossing the Knik Arm. The plan to construct suitable docking facilities never came to be, and the ferry remains moored in Ketchikan.

Former Juneau Police Officer To Serve 9 Years In Prison
No was hurt or killed when a former Juneau police officer and SWAT commander barricaded himself inside his house and shot as many as 75 rounds at other officers during Easter weekend last year. The attempted murder charges filed against Troy Wilson were eventually dropped as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Orphaned Sea Otter Pups Recovering At SeaLife Center
A pair of Sea Otter pups turned in to the Alaska SeaLife Center as orphaned are doing fine now. The center says hand feeding the animals was quite a chore because they consume 25 to 30 percent of their body weight each day. They are being transitioned from formula to seafood. Agnes was found near Homer in April. Nutka was found in June on Kodiak Island.
