Crews Respond To Teller Fire

Yesterday morning a fire destroyed three buildings in the village of Teller. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department responded, flying in six fire fighters before their equipment could be brought to the scene. The old Teller Commercial building, a former store, and an abandoned house all burned down. Also damaged was the Mary's Igloo tribal office. The Teller church and the power plant were saved. Troopers Call Off Search For Missing Delta Junction Man

Alaska State Troopers have called off the search for a Delta Junction man missing since last weekend. According to Troopers, an officer from the Delta Post found Emmanuel Martin Hosier’s car parked at a bluff overlooking the Tanana River Sunday night. The 20-year-old was last seen by family Saturday evening.

Ravens Damaging Southeast Golf Courses

Golfers aren’t the only ones hitting the links in Wrangell. They’re joined by a group of ravens, who are causing extensive damage to the course. Golf courses throughout Southeast are experiencing a similar problem.

Students Show Less-Risky Behavior than in Years Past

Students in Alaska’s traditional high schools have made improvement in fourteen of the twenty risk categories that are considered by the federal Center for Disease Control. Statistically they showed no change in four categories. And the only component in which they showed an increase was the use of condoms.

Report Blames Current, Maneuvering Error For Ferry Crash

The Alaska Marine Highway has concluded that a strong tidal current and a maneuvering error by the captain of the state ferry Matanuska resulted in the May 7 crash with a seafood processing plant in Petersburg.

Former State Rep. Heinze Dies In Homer Floatplane Accident

A floatplane accident in Homer Tuesday night claimed the life of former Alaska state legislator Cheryll Heinze, who represented Anchorage for one term in 2003 and 2004. Federal investigators are unsure what exactly caused the Cessna 206 carrying Heinze and four others to flip over while attempting to land on Homer’s Beluga Lake.

Alaska State Troopers and dozens of Delta Junction-area volunteers are searching for a 20-year-old man who hasn’t been seen since Sunday evening.

Candidate Deadline To Back Out Of Election Passes

The ballots closed just a few minutes ago in the final formality before next month’s primary elections. Candidates who had filed to run in the party races had until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to remove their names from consideration. Since the election season began, 11 people have backed out of running – and two have been refused a spot on the ballot.

Six American jet skiers are back on American soil after spending five days in detention in Lavrentiya, Russia. The group crossed the Bering Strait without proper documentation while filming for the reality show Dangerous Waters.

Animator Uses Kickstarter To Fund Interactive Story Project

An animator from Fairbanks just raised over $40,000 on Kickstarter to build an interactive story about a whale on driftwood stilts. Kickstarter is a website that provides a platform for grassroots, do-it-yourself fundraising for projects like movies, music and journalism. Now based in San Francisco, Gabriel Smetzer is able to devote himself fully to the project with the money he raised.

UAF Getting Winter Terrain Park

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will become the nation’s first to have an on campus winter terrain park. It’s midsummer, but plans are in the works for the ski and snowboard facility.

School Funding Programs Extended For A Year

A federal funding program key to Southeast school districts will remain in place for another year. An extension of the Secure Rural Schools Program is part of a recently passed transportation bill. The program has been a mainstay for districts in or near National Forests in and outside of Alaska.

Lawmakers Search For Ways To Lower Energy Costs

Legislators began looking for ways to help lower energy costs for Alaskans on Wednesday, but they aren’t finding many options yet. The Senate Energy Working Group Chairman Bill Wielechowski, an Anchorage Democrat, said the first of several anticipated hearings will address questions that frequently come up.

Beluga Had Numerous Infections

Necropsy results show the baby beluga whale rescued in Alaska last month had multiple infections, including in his heart and lungs. Alaska SeaLife Center veterinarian Dr. Carrie Goertz says in an email to The Associated Press that early tests also confirmed suspicions that the whale's immune system wasn't fully developed.
