Southeast Dungeness Crab Catch Down

Overall catch and effort was down again this summer for Southeast’s Dungeness crab fishery, which closed in mid-August. That’s according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s preliminary totals, which were made available last week.

Rain Raises Flood Concerns in the Interior

There’s concern about high water in areas of the interior. National Weather Service meteorologist John Lingas in Fairbanks says heavy rain has fallen over an area from the central interior to the southeastern Brooks Range in recent days.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has a new athletic director. Gary Gray is coming to Fairbanks from UAF rival Montanan State University. At a press conference announcing the selection Friday morning, UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers credited Gray’s experience.

Telecommunications Issues Causing Problems In Wales

Telecommunications problems in Wales have caused issues for Wales’s residents, organizations and corporations in the past month and a half. Wales, with a population of 145 is located at the Western tip of the Seward Peninsula and is closer to Russia than it is to Anchorage. Residents have had trouble getting their concerns addressed by the companies providing services.

AK: Hot Springs

For many residents of Tenakee Springs, in Southeast Alaska, life revolves around the community bath house, which is fed by the hot springs that give the town its name. Now, this old local institution is receiving a very 21st century renovation, as local people have raised money to convert the building to geothermal heat, putting a modern spin on the town’s ancient resource.

One Dead, One Missing, Two Safe After FV Advantage Sinks

The Coast Guard has been searching all night for one crew member still missing after a fishing boat sank south of Kodiak. An automated distress signal from the 58-foot Advantage was picked up just after midnight 50 miles southeast of Kodiak city. Three crewmen were rescued and are being treated for hypothermia.

Various media reports indicate the Pentagon is contemplating pursuing legal action against Matt Bsisonnette. Bissonnettee recounts the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in a new book written under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The University of Alaska Southeast has received a $50,000 memorial gift from the estate of Emma G. Widmark, given in the name of her father Dr. Alfred E. Widmark.

Two Medium Earthquakes Hit Aleutian Chain

A moderate-sized earthquake occurred near Unalaska early this morning. The 4.0-magnitude earthquake happened on the Pacific side of the island, nearly 40 miles from town. It struck at around 3am, and occurred at a depth of 21 miles below the earth’s surface.

Massive Drug Bust Spans Several States

Thursday there was a massive cocaine bust that spanned several states as well as Anchorage and Fairbanks. Five people were arrested in raids of homes in Anchorage. Eleven people were indicted, including two arrested in Rochester, New York and one arrested in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Two suspects remain at large in the Fairbanks area.

Incumbent Rep. Johansen Talks About His Candidacy

Ketchikan’s Kyle Johansen is officially running for the District 33 House seat as an independent. The incumbent Republican representative dropped out of the party primary race earlier this year. State elections officials certified his general-election petition Monday.

Pollock Fleet Sees Drop in Bycatch

The Bering Sea pollock fleet is on track to have a record-low year with chum bycatch. As of August 28, the fleet had taken 8,600 chum salmon. That’s a welcome turnaround after last year, when nearly 200,000 chum were caught incidentally. The high bycatch rate in 2011 triggered voluntary fishing closures across the Bering Sea.

Coast Guard Performs Medevac from Shell Drill Ship

The Coast Guard medevaced a crew member from Shell’s Noble Discoverer drill ship in the Norton Sound Wednesday morning. The Noble Discoverer was about 70 miles off the coast of Nome when they called the Coast Guard for help around 4 a.m.

Ballot Propositions Fall; Young Wins Republican Nomination

Both ballot propositions fall in the Primary Election. Two Republic incumbents lose their primary election bids. Approximately 10 new members join the Alaska House of Representatives. Don Young takes the Republican nomination in dominating fashion. Voter turnout comes in at under 25 percent.
