Illness Hits Two Alaska Cruise Ships

Two cruise ships sailing Alaska waters have had recent outbreaks of norovirus or another gastrointestinal illness. Norovirus is a highly contagious illness causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Alaska VA Stands Down For Southeast Vets

More than 800 military vets attended the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs first ever “Stand Down” in Southeast Alaska last week. “Stand Down” events are designed to give veterans access to health care and housing services, both from the VA and local nonprofits. A new agreement between the VA and Alaska Native health care providers should make it easier for vets in rural Alaska to access those services.

Two Dead, One Missing After Goodnews Bay Sinking

A boat sank with three aboard in Goodnews Bay Friday night. The bodies of two of those aboard were found, but the third is still missing. Dead are Richard Ross, 57, and Sam Pavala, 49. Missing is Angela Chingliak, 28, or Goodnews Bay. State Troopers say the cause of the sinking is under investigation.

Two Rescued After Boat Sinks Near Kruzof Island

A fishing boat sank off the outer coast of Kruzof Island Saturday morning. The Coast Guard helicopter had some trouble finding the two crew members of the 35-foot Kaitlin Rae, which sank at Beaver Point.

Shell Rig Anchors At Chukchi Drill Site

After months of delays and mishaps, Shell could start drilling in the Arctic over the weekend. The company had hoped to begin earlier this week, but stormy weather in the Chukchi Sea has delayed preparations.

Parnell Declares Disaster in Kivalina

Governor Sean Parnell has issued a disaster declaration for Kivalina, a community within Northwest Arctic Borough. The declaration makes funds available to pay for expenses associated with emergency protective measures and immediate efforts to refill the community’s water holding tanks.

Anchorage city officials are not saying yet just how much the cleanup is costing the municipality after Tuesday’s storm or if the Muni will request emergency status from the state.

AK: Ghost Town

Until the late Nineties, Adak was a bustling military base. It had a bowling alley, a movie theatre, and housing for thousands. Now, with the Navy gone, the Aleutian town sits mostly empty. There’s a chance Arctic drilling could turn it into a boom town, but right now, the place feels like a collection of modern ruins. 300 Villages: King Salmon & Naknek

Today for 300 villages we’re heading to King Salmon and Naknek, communities separated by a 16 mile road. The communities are at the start of the Alaska Peninsula and a gateway to Katmai National Park.

New Energy Information Available for Communities

The Alaska Energy Authority and the Department of Natural Resources today released a 144-page study that shows information currently available from across the state on sites containing usable quantities of fossil fuels and geothermal energy.

It joins two other volumes published by the Energy Authority that show likely sources of renewable energy that could be used by communities.

Budget Cuts Leave Oil and Gas in Dark

The Office of Management and Budget failed to issue a plan Friday guiding virtually every department of the government on how they should cut their budgets. The report won’t come until “late next week.” The cuts, known as the sequester, will trim $1.2 trillion from the federal budget over a decade. If Congress does not, on January 2nd, the government will begin trimming more than $100 billion immediately. With the clock ticking, the oil and gas industry does not know what to expect.

2,400 Still Without Power in Anchorage

About 400 customers in East Anchorage are still without power, according to Municipal Light and Power spokesperson Ronnie Dent. Dent said Friday morning that additional residences without electricity were located late Thursday evening, many of them in apartments.
