Police Don’t Suspect Foul Play In Anchorage Woman’s Death

Anchorage police say there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in a tent pitched in the woods late Friday. Janet Eikemo, 54, was reportedly suffering from cancer and died while sleeping with some other people in the tent, including her son.

Pilot OK After Floatplane Crashes In Anchorage

A pilot escaped injury after crashing her floatplane while trying to land at the seaplane base in Anchorage. Clint Johnson with the National Transportation Safety Board says the plane is owned and operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Johnson says the plane crashed after losing control during touchdown. Anchorage Daily News reports that as of Sunday afternoon, the plane was underwater and surrounded by booms to try to contain the leaking oil.

Man Arrested In Metlakatla Homicide Case

State Troopers say they have a suspect in custody in a homicide case in Metlakatla, on Annette Island in Southeast. Twenty-nine-year-old Willam Buxton is charged with first-degree murder for the death of Leona Meely, 57. Meely died from injuries from a fight at her home, allegedly with Buxton, who also lived there. Troopers were contacted around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday of the suspicious death. The investigation is on-going.

Pilot Station Boy Dies After Being Shot With Air Rifle

A nine-year old boy in Pilot Station died on Friday after being shot in the chest with an air rifle by another nine-year-old boy. According to the Anchorage Daily News, the boys were arguing at the time that 4th grader Spencer Polty was killed. Clinic staff in the community of about 500 near Bethel tried unsuccessfully to administer CPR. State Troopers are not holding the other child in custody.

Troopers Arrest Fugitive Wanted In Sleetmute Kidnapping, Rape

A fugitive wanted for kidnapping and rape has been apprehended after eluding Troopers for two and a half days. The incident happened in Sleetmute, a village on the Upper Kuskokwim River.

Instead, imagine quinoa or brown rice, locally-grown salad or roasted brussel sprouts and baked fish or homemade pizza with whole grain crust. That’s the direction some U.S. schools are headed as they try to serve healthier meals and teach kids more about nutrition and exercise. Two Alaska districts are getting some national recognition for their efforts on that front.

UA Regents Approve Tuition Hike

The University of Alaska Board of Regents have voted 9-1 to increase tuition. The board on Friday approved what the university system is calling the lowest increase in over a decade. The board, meeting in Juneau, approved UA President Pat Gamble's proposal to raise tuition by 2 percent for resident undergraduates and a 4 percent increase for non-resident undergraduates. Regents also approved a 2 percent increase to the graduate resident and non-resident rate.
