UPDATED: Man Dead After Bear Mauling Near Sitka

A Sitka man is dead after an encounter with a brown bear. Authorities spent Monday searching southern Chichagof Island, near Sitka, for the animal believed to be responsible in the fatal mauling of a 54-year-old Tomas Puerta.

Tugboat Gets Stuck Near St. Michael

A tugboat is stuck two miles outside of St. Michael in Norton Sound. Both men aboard the vessel are safe onshore and there is currently no fuel leaking.

Research Vessel ‘Sikuliaq’ Launches In Wisconsin

The University of Alaska Fairbanks realized a dream over the weekend, with the launch of a new Arctic research vessel. The 261-foot Sikuliaq splashed into a river feeding Lake Michigan in Marinette, Wisconsin Saturday. The $200 million vessel project is largely supported by federal economic stimulus funding. The ship is owned by the National Science Foundation and will be operated by UAF. The launch culminated decades of planning and advocacy by the university. The Need For Alaska Native Teachers

Alaska Native students make up nearly one-quarter of the student body in the state, but only five percent of teachers are Alaska Native. And new research from UAA shows despite years of effort, it’s been difficult to get more Native educators into Alaska Schools. Engineers Gather At AFN To Work On Rural Challenges

A group of engineers and technically talented volunteers from San Francisco will be at the Alaska Federation of Natives annual convention this week to help work on rural Alaska challenges. The organization ReAllocate is looking for partners in Alaska for a program called StartUP Country.

View Second Anchorage Body Identified, No Apparent Connection in a larger map The deceased female found in the Mountain View neighborhood of Anchorage last week has been identified as 62-year-old Marie Andrews. The woman's body was found by passersby Thursday afternoon near the Mountain View Community Church. The day before, another woman's body was discovered in a wooded area near Dowling Road and Quinahagak Street. She has been identified as 24-year-old Michelle Felber.

Troopers Make Third Arrest In Homer Sexual Assault Case

Another arrest has been made in an ongoing sexual assault case that stems from a teenage party in Homer last month. Alaska State Troopers said in a statement Monday that an unidentified 16-year-old male was taken into custody at a private residence Sunday night.

Troopers Sieze Meth Lab In Hoonah

Alaska State Troopers seized a meth lab in Hoonah on Friday. Forty-nine year old Gary Chamblin of Hoonah and 36-year-old David Pierce of Oregon had methamphetamines and the chemicals and equipment used to make more in a commercial storage facility in the village of 750 people in Southeast Alaska. They were sent to a correctional facility in Juneau with a bail set at $50,000 each.

APD Identifies Body Found In Mountain View

The Anchorage Police Department identified the body found in Mountain View as 62-year-old Marie Andrews. The cause of death is still under investigation. Two bodies were found outdoors in Anchorage last week. They are thought to be unrelated.

JBER Soldier Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

An army sergeant was found dead in his car last week in Anchorage from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 25-year-old Sgt. Brent Steven Barnett-Lamothe was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and originally from Highland, California. He returned from a deployment to Afghanistan last month. His next of kin have been notified. The army has reported over 210 suspected suicides this year, one of the highest rates ever.

Airline Passenger Charged With Disorderly Conduct

The Ted Stevens International Airport was shut down for about three hours at around midnight on Sunday after a passenger made a joke about a bomb in a suitcase. The Anchorage Daily News reports that 44-year-old Peter Friesema, a hockey referee from Colorado, joked that his friend’s bag could have a bomb in it. The airport was evacuated, people were stuck waiting in the cold, and about half a dozen flights were impacted.

Man Killed In Trooper-Involved Shooting Near Wasilla

An Alaska State Trooper was shot and a man died during a traffic stop near Wasilla around 4 a.m. on Saturday. According to department reports, the trooper was gathering information on three people in the vehicle when 22-year-old Nicholas Leo Frazier of Anchorage got out of the van and started shooting at the trooper with a handgun. The trooper was wounded but returned fire.

Mayor Amends Budget Proposal, Fire Station Off Chopping Block

Friday, Anchorage Municipal leaders met at city hall to go over the proposed 2013 budget. The Mayor's chief financial officer announced amendments to Proposed Budget 'B,’ small changes that could make a big difference to the fire department.

Attuans Remember Japanese Occupation During WWII

During World War II, the Japanese occupied the Aleutian island of Attu, and shipped its residents off to prisoner of war camps. The village was never resettled and for decades, it was all but forgotten. This week, the surviving Attuans and those descended from the village gathered in Anchorage.

Fairbanks Ordinance Creates Interior Alaska Natural Gas Distribution Utility

The Fairbanks North Star Borough passed an ordinance Thursday night that creates the Interior Alaska Natural Gas Distribution Utility. Proponents hope it will bring natural gas to Fairbanks in a cheap and expedited manner, but approval didn’t come without a last minute curveball.

A large contingent of Alaskans is in Wisconsin to attend Saturday’s launch of a new Arctic research vessel that will be home ported in Alaska. Devil’s club is probably best known as a plant to avoid at all costs. But several small Southeast Alaska companies have a different take. They’re turning the roots, stems and bark of the plant into rubs and salves to treat sore joints and damaged skin. Sitka is the center of the growing industry.
