‘In Pursuit of Alaska’ Highlights State’s Earliest Visitors

Author and historian Jean Morgan Meaux lived in Alaska during the hectic and heady days of oil pipeline construction. She returned to her native Louisiana after many years here, but has never forgotten her adopted state. Meaux will travel through Alaska later this month to promote her book In Pursuit of Alaska, a collection of accounts of some of the earliest visitors to the Great Land, starting with John Muir. Weather is cooperating with crews fighting the Bitter Creek fire along the Alaska Highway, 30 milres southeast of Tok. The 2300 acre fire was ignited by lightning. It’s now estimated to be within one mile of the highway.

One person is dead and six were rescued from a floatplane crash Tuesday on the mainland near Petersburg.

Military Construction, Veterans Affairs Bill Passes US House

The U.S. House has passed a $73.5 billion Military Construction Appropriations bill, which includes Veterans Administration programs. About $200 million of that would be spent in Alaska. Representative Don Young says the bill includes money to start reducing a backlog of VA claims.

ConocoPhillips Fighting $45,000 Fine

ConocoPhillips is fighting a $45,000 fine for allegedly failing to report pressure levels in the Kuparuk field in a timely fashion. The fines also cover a missed a mechanical integrity test. The Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Conservation is scheduled to have a hearing on the matter in August.

Cargo Vessel Detained In Valdez After Oily Leak Discovered

A cargo vessel has been detained at the dock in Valdez because something oily is leaking out of its containers. The Caribbean-registered "BBC Arizona" was delivering construction beams when the leak was discovered.

Alaska Airlines Announces Direct Flights To Las Vegas, Phoenix

Alaska Airlines announced a schedule of December direct flights between Anchorage and Las Vegas, with a special promotional fare on Tuesday. It is also introducing a Phoenix direct route at that time. And it says it will be bringing in Horizon Air planes for some in-state routes beginning next March.
