State Reports Progress In Galena Cleanup

The state is reporting progress in Galena, as the community cleans up from major flooding. The ice jam flood, earlier this month, damaged and destroyed many homes and other buildings, forcing the evacuation of most of the village’s 400 residents. The state Division of Emergency Management says power has been restored to most areas of Galena, fuel service has resumed and the local public radio station is back on the air. Download Audio

Interior-Based Militia Unit Regroups, Invites Others To Training Rendezvous

An Interior Alaska militia group gathered over the weekend near Delta Junction. The Central Alaska Militia’s leader says the group is not associated with the defunct Fairbanks based Alaska Peacekeepers Militia. That group’s leader Schaeffer Cox, was sentenced to 26 years in prison, earlier this year, for plotting to kill government officials. Download Audio

Unangan Elder Mary Nicolai Bourdukofsky Passes Away

Most who saw it called it a blimp, but technically, it was an airship. The environmental group Greenpeace inflated the floating billboard at a Douglas Island ballfield Saturday evening, then flew over Gastineau Channel to downtown Juneau and back.

Man Fatally Mauled By Bear

Alaska State Troopers say a man was mauled to death by a bear at a remote lake in the state’s interior late Thursday night. Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says the victim was 64-year-old Robert Weaver of Fairbanks. Download Audio

Group Commemorating 100 Year Anniversary Of First Denali Summit

Parnell Looks To Europe For Insight On Oil Tax Policy
