New Book Delves Into Life Of ‘Papa Pilgrim’

A new book by longtime Alaska journalist Tom Kizzia hits bookstores Tuesday. “Pilgrim’s Wilderness: A True Story of Faith and Madness on the Alaska Frontier” details the story of Robert Allen Hale – better known to Alaskans as “Papa Pilgrim” – who for years terrorized his family in the remote mountains of Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park. Calling All Heroes

2012 Summer of Heroes at the State Fair Today we’re making heroes. Heather Cavanaugh oversees the Summer of Heroes program, a partnership with ACS and the Boys and Girls Club. The program nominates and awards Alaskan youths for their outstanding community service. Winners of the award will receive a $1500 scholarship, as well as invitations to special events and recognition ceremonies. Read more.

Oil tax Repeal Group Turns In More Than 50,000 Signatures

Singing the Alaska Flag Song, supporters of a referendum to repeal the state’s new oil tax turned in more than 51,000 signatures on Saturday to the Division of Elections Anchorage office.

Stuart Creek 2 Fire 57 Percent Contained

The Stuart Creek 2 Fire burning northeast of Fairbanks is 57 percent contained despite warm, dry weather over the weekend. The fire grew to more than 85,000 acres Sunday.

Cyclist Survives Wolf Pursuit On The Alaska Highway

A cyclist had the race of his life recently (Saturday) in Yukon as he pedaled to outrun a wolf chasing him along the Alaska Highway. Three cyclists are biking from Idaho to Alaska’s North Slope to raise money for charity. About 60 miles west of Watson Lake, Mac Hollan’s two companions stopped to fix some bike equipment, leaving him to ride ahead. When he heard breathing behind him he thought his teammates had caught up to him. He looked back to see a wolf instead. Download Audio

StoryTRACKS Gets Kids Reading Outdoors

A new project in Anchorage helps kids combine playing outside with reading books. Best Beginnings project manager Barbara Brown hosted the StoryTRACKS ribbon cutting event on the Loussac Public Library lawn on July 11. Each page of the children's book We're Going on a Bear Hunt was laminated and mounted on signposts so that kids could read together and run around at the same time. Brown says thanks to an Anchorage Parks Foundation grant, they'll be able to create ten sets of laminated books that will soon make the rounds to parks and trails across the city.
