Youth Crew Builds Memories at Spencer Glacier
This summer, five agencies came together to create a ten-week outdoor career program for Anchorage youth, aged 17 to 20. The program took them from city parks to the Chugach National Forest, clearing trees, building bridges, and cutting trails. The students' last project was at the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, where they spent a month building a new trail and learning about the environment -- and the employment options -- in their own backyards.

‘Not Dead Yet’: Living With Terminal Cancer
Dawn Dillard never wanted to retire. The 57-year-old expected to keep working as a public advocacy lawyer until she turned 100, but last year, a diagnosis of uterine cancer forced her into retirement. Now her full time job is fighting terminal cancer. And she says even if the disease kills her, she doesn't want it to defeat her.

Gardens at Bragaw to Celebrate Grand Opening
The community gardens at Bragaw Street and 4th Avenue are finally bearing fruit – and vegetables. The Anchorage Community Land Trust negotiated with the municipality of Anchorage to take over the project in 2012 with help from state and grant funding. The ACLT will host the gardens’ opening celebration this Friday.

Clean Up Begins On Cargo Ship In Valdez With Leaky Containers
Crews have begun cleaning and decontaminating a cargo ship that has been docked in the Port of Valdez for almost two weeks after leaking containers were discovered onboard. The BBC Arizona’s cargo was offloaded into a decontamination area earlier this week. Coast Guard spokesperson Lieutenant Allie Ferko says all 28 containers will be removed whether they are leaking or not...
