RurAL CAP, a statewide, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, has been working to improve the quality of life for low-income Alaskans since 1965. RurAL CAP employed 1,048 Alaskans in 2010 with expenditures of more than $32 million. It provides resources and services to enhance child and family development, improve housing, reduce energy costs, develop leadership, protect traditional uses of fish and game, improve solid waste management, support health and wellness, develop community plans, and foster independent living.

Tobacco Prevention and Policy in Alaska

It is no wonder that throughout Alaska and the country, health organizations and clinics are developing tobacco cessation programs in increasing numbers. According to a 2004 report, Tobacco in the Great Land: A Portrait of Alaska’s Leading Cause of Death, tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in Alaska. Tobacco use was responsible for approximately one in every five deaths in Alaska in 2001. Read more.

Cleaning Up Rural Alaska – The Marshall Cleanup

Community cleanups are nothing new to Marshall, Alaska. For years, the environmental department of the Marshall Tribal Council has hosted drives to collect cans, cardboard, scrap lumber and whatever else local residents have been willing to part with in efforts to make the Yukon River community of around 400 a cleaner and safer community in which to live. New Mobile App Highlights Rural Alaska

The Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. (RurAL CAP) announces the release of a free mobile application (also known as app) for use on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The RurAL CAP app provides a self-directed tour through Alaska’s unique character, communities, natural resources, people and cultures. Users will see how much a half-gallon of milk costs from Ketchikan to Anaktuvuk Pass to Hooper Bay, and compares prices from other U.S. cities. Read more.
