Daysha Eaton is a contributor with the Alaska Public Radio Network.

Daysha Eaton holds a B.A. from Evergreen State College, and a M.A. from the University of Southern California. Daysha got her start in radio at Seattle public radio stations, KPLU and KUOW. Before coming to KBBI, she was the News Director at KYUK in Bethel. She has also worked as the Southcentral Reporter for KSKA in Anchorage.

Daysha's work has appeared on NPR's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered", PRI's "The World" and "National Native News". She's happy to take assignments, and to get news tips, which are best sent via email.

Daysha became a journalist because she believes in the power of storytelling. Stories connect us and they help us make sense of our world. They shed light on injustice and they comfort us in troubled times. She got into public broadcasting because it seems to fulfill the intention of the 4th Estate and to most effectively apply the freedom of the press granted to us through the Constitution. She feels that public radio has a special way of moving people emotionally through sound, taking them to remote places, introducing them to people they would not otherwise meet and compelling them to think about issues they might ordinarily overlook.

Anchorage Remembers Samantha Koenig

Hundreds of people turned out to remember slain Barista Samantha Koenig at a memorial service held at West High School in Anchorage this weekend. Photos of Koenig lined the hall outside the auditorium where friends, family and community members gathered to celebrate her 18 years of life. The Angel-themed memorial service featured remembrances, a video presentation and several musical performances.

U.S. Attorney’s Office Files Charges Against Keyes in Koenig Case

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Anchorage today announced three new charges against Israel Keyes for allegedly kidnapping and killing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig. Kevin Feldis, Chief of the criminal division at the Anchorage U.S. Attorney’s Office described the charges in a press conference this afternoon.

Assembly Appoints New Leaders Amid Ballot Scandal

The Anchorage Assembly heard emotional public testimony at their regular meeting Tuesday evening. Representatives of the Anchorage chapters of the NAACP and the ACLU, as well as 17 voters called on the body to appoint an independent investigator to look into possible voter disenfranchisement during the April 3 Municipal Election. Instead, the Assembly went about business as usual.

Legislature Funds Education For The Short-Term

In a last minute push, the Alaska Legislature passed funding for schools over the weekend. They passed SB 182, an education package and SB 160 - the capital budget. Together, they provide more than $100 million in funding for districts across the state.

ACLU Presents Disenfranchised Voter Affidavits To Anchorage Assembly

As of noon on April 10, the ACLU of Alaska says more than 150 voters had called or emailed them to report disenfranchisement during last week’s municipal election in Anchorage. They say the voters that contacted them represent at least 54 separate polling places where they encountered problems. The ACLU is presenting affidavits from the disenfranchised voters to the Anchorage Assembly, and pressing for an independent investigation.

Polling Places Running Out of Ballots

Some polling places ran out of municipal election ballots. Lisa Reider-Bott of Eagle River said she arrived at her polling place at the Eagle River Lions Club about 6:00 pm but she couldn't vote.
