Parking changes coming to Anchorage’s downtown corridor

There’s a battle brewing in Anchorage over parking. It centers on a new plan to start charging at parking meters during weekends. As Alaska Public Media’s Zachariah Hughes reports, the debate is over whether the changes will drive business in or out of the area.
Union treasurer charged with embezzling almost $200,000

The former treasurer of an entertainment industry union that raked in money during Alaska’s film-making boom is charged with stealing nearly 200,000 dollars from the union. Sixty-two-year-old Anchorage resident Ann Reddig is charged with embezzlement and forgery.
Overdue fishermen found dead near Unalakleet

The bodies of two fishermen missing from a western Alaska village have been recovered. Searchers Tuesday found the bodies of 55-year-old Peter Nanouk and 35-year-old Justin Nanouk of Unalakleet near the mouth of the Golsovia River about 20 miles south of the village.
Search called off for two missing in skiff near Wales

The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man and a boy missing on a boating trip out of the Bering Strait village of Wales. The 23-year-old man and 14-year-old boy launched a wooden rowboat at 2 a.m. Sunday. They were not wearing life jackets.
Sewer replacement project unearths old artifacts

A sewer replacement project in Sitka has turned up more evidence that one of Alaska’s oldest cities has been inhabited for a long, long time.
A stone tool — resembling a wedge, or striker — was unearthed in an excavation beneath a street in downtown Sitka, and may never have been found, but for a retired anthropologist who knew what to look for.
