Mat-Su Borough elections yield unexpected results

This week’s election in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough took an unexpected turn. Ballots are still being counted and the winner of the Borough mayor’s race is still undetermined.   Incumbent Mayor Larry DeVilbiss is lagging behind challenger and former Borough Assemblyman Vern Halter.  The race is close,  and the outcome may be determined by the hundreds of absentee and questioned ballots still being counted.

And the three cities within the Borough had their own elections on Tuesday, also with some surprising results. We have a tie for one Palmer city council seat, and two very different views on marijuana retail businesses, as well as some sales tax questions that didn’t do so well at the polls.

All those events point to some changes in store for Valley residents, and we’ll be taking a look at what may be down the road for them.
