Dime Piece Mix #6: Spring Vibes

By now, you’re familiar with my Dime Piece mixes, right? Here’s the deal: Sometimes When I come up for an idea or a theme for a mix, I get so consumed thinking about all the songs I want to include that it never ends up being more than a concept.

In an effort to keep things simple, I decided to start a series of 10-song recordings. The limited tracklisting keeps me from over-thinking things and I’ve been able to come up with some really fun mixes. Since they’re all 10 tracks long, I decided to call them “Dime Pieces.” You can find more of them here.

For the sixth entry in my “Dime Piece” series, I picked 10 of my current favorite jams. Like an early spring day, I decided to start out crisp and cool with some mellow, vibey stuff and then gradually heat up by working into some house cuts.

1. John Legend – “Dreams (Sammy Bananas Bootleg)”

Sammy is on Fools Gold and has cranked out a bunch of great dance releases and remixes. He described this cut as a “slow burner” and I thought it was a great way to start this mix off.

2. Todd Terje – “Preben Goes To Acapulco”

Todd has released a string off super ill disco, house, disco house and originals and re-edits (I’ve always thought this MJ edit was incredible). He’s got a new album and in addition to the dope uptempo stuff, there are some great, vibey cuts like this one.

3. Pharrell feat. Daft Punk – Gust of Wind

This one shouldn’t really be a secret. Daft Punk are gods. Pharrell has been making hit records since Wreckx-n-Effect. Great cut.

4. POOLS – Go Outside

POOLS is a collabo of LA’s Theee Mike B and DJ Morse Code. They produced a pair of vinyl releases and a handful of nice, long mixes with stoney, sunny tracks like this. Oh and Mike just launched his Brillsteinproject, also very tite.

5. Detroit Swindle feat. Mayer Hawthorne – 64 Ways

I’ll admit I didn’t know much about Detroit Swindle until Mayer mentioned something about this collabo the other day online. They make some great house music and I especially dig this cut with Mr. Hawthorne.

6. Disclosure feat. Sam Smith – Latch (MisterMack remix)

You already know that the Disclosure album was one of my favorites of the year from my Best of 2013 mix(along with Mayer and Daft Punk too). I came across this remix one on soundcloud the other day.

7. Alfa Paare – Heartbeat

Alfa Paare is two dope DJs, Excel and Impulse and they make straight-forward house bangers like this.

8. Solidisco – Top of the World

I’ve been working this Solidisco cut into my sets lately when I want some house oomph without all the car alarm noises so prevalent in the more clubby stuff.

9. Duck Sauce – Party In Me

You already know that Duck Sauce is made up of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden and they just put out anew album. This track, however is one of the joints they dropped for free after they put out this banging mix / tape.

10. Chromeo – Jealous (I Ain’t With It)

I felt it was only right to follow up one Macklovitch brother with the other. The new Chromeo album hasn’t dropped yet (White Women!) but all of the singles so far have been great. This is just the newest. In fact, they did it on Kimmel the other night and set it off.
