The main stem of the Kuskokwim River has gone without restrictions for salmon fishing this season. At least, up until now. Restrictions will go into affect this Friday in the form of 6-inch gear limitations.
The lowest part of the river, from the mouth to the Tuluksak River will be restricted to 6 inch gear or less from 1 a.m. Friday through next Wednesday, July 3rd at 11 p.m.
The next portion of the river will follow. From Tuluksak to Chuathbaluk will see a 6-inch gear restriction from Wednesday at 1 a.m. to Saturday, July 6th, at 11 p.m.
The decision to restrict gear to six inch nets came at a Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group meeting this morning in Bethel. State managers and Working Group members discussed the goal of having more King salmon head upriver to fishermen there as most downriver residents have harvested what they need.
Tributary restrictions will remain as before.
