Coast Guard crews have rescued five people after their 55-foot fishing tender boat lost steering in high seas about 50 miles southeast of Cordova.
A fishing vessel relayed a mayday call Friday evening from the tender St. Joseph.
Petty Officer Jacques Castro says it was too unsafe to leave them aboard the boat in 20-foot seas. A helicopter crew safely hoisted the five people to safety Friday night and took them to Cordova.
The St. Joseph remains adrift. The Coast Guard is working on trying to relocate the vessel Saturday. Mariners in the area are being warned of possible hazards to navigation posed by the drifting vessel.
