Hikers Attacked by Bear in Talkeetna Mountains

A group of hikers on an extended outing in the Talkeetna Mountains was attacked by a bear while crossing a stream Saturday night.  Two in the group were badly injured and evacuated by National Guard helicopter to Providence Hospital in Anchorage.  Five others were taken to the Talkeetna clinic.  The group was on a trip run by the National Outdoor Leadership School.  They were all in their teens.  Joshua Berg of New York and Samuel Gottsegen of Denver were the two taken to Anchorage.  The others were listed as Samuel Boas of Westport, Connecticut,  Noah Allaine of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Simeon Melman of Huntington, New York, Victor Martin of Richmond, California, and Shane Garlock of Pittsford, New York.

The bear was reportedly a sow with cubs.
