There was tourist mayhem Thursday night in downtown Anchorage that resulted in the Fire Department being called to get people out of a smashed up bus. According to police reports, the incident started at about 8:30, when a man spotted a Community Service Patrol van by a downtown hotel. The CSP officers had five people in the van for transport, and were out of the van checking on another. The man, identified as Donny Weston, 35, is said to have got out of a taxi, and jumped into the driver’s seat of the van.
Then began a wild ride down a one-way street the wrong way. The van struck a tourist bus, and jammed the door shut. It continued up Fifth Avenue and ended up in front of a bar. Weston fled on foot and was arrested at the Tourist Information Center a block away. Weston faces numerous charges. There were no injuries reported. The tour bus belonged to Royal Highway Tours, and only the driver and two staffers were inside. They were freed by the Fire Department.
