Assembly Sides With Coal Road

Ellen Lockyer, KSKA – Anchorage

Healy-based Usibelli Coal  is hoping to develop a new mine at Wishbone Hill, near Sutton. Some  Matanuska – Susitna Borough residents gathered to protest against the mine Tuesday afternoon in downtown Palmer before the Mat-Su Borough Assembly addressed the issue of extending a land use permit that allows Usibelli to build a road to the mine.  The current  permit  expires in five years, so Usibelli requested an extension for another 25 years to ensure access into the future.  As KSKA’s Ellen Lockyer reports,  Assembly members sided with the mining company.
